World's Largest Container Ship Changes Hands

There have been several challenges to the coveted title of having the ‘World’s Largest Container Ship’ recently, as carriers have been introducing a host of newly built ULCVs (Ultra Large Container Vessels) into service.

The official record at the turn of the year was held by Evergreen Line, with their 'Ever Alot' just previously replacing the ‘Ever Ace’ at the top and being capable of carrying 24,004 TEU.

MSC toppled Evergreen and briefly held the record in March with their 24,114 TEU MSC Tessa. However, the ‘OOCL Spain’ was delivered in the same month with a capacity of 24,188 TEU and may have taken the accolade for a few days before MSC introduced an even bigger ship.

The ‘MSC Irina’ is the current title holder with a massive 24,346 TEU capacity, and she has an identically sized sister ship, the 'MSC Loreto'.

The world's top five largest container ships according to Marine Insight are as follows:

  1. MSC Irina/Loreto - 24,346 TEU
  2. OOCL Spain - 24,188 TEU
  3. MSC Tessa - 24,114 TEU
  4. Ever Alot - 24,004 TEU
  5. Ever Ace - 23,992 TEU

However, with more ships being introduced over the coming weeks, who would bet against the record being broken again?
