World's Largest Carrier Continues To Buy Ships

The world's largest ocean freight carrier - MSC - are continuing to snap up containerships and cement their position at the top.

As MSC heads towards it's much reported split from the 2M Alliance, it has increased its capacity lead over current partner Maersk, by close to a massive one million TEU.

The Swiss based carrier are understood to have purchased around 300 second-hand ships since 2020, and have also introduced a series of brand new mega ships this past year. This notably includes the sister ships MSC Irina and MSC Loreto, which jointly share the accolade of being the current largest containership in the world.

MSC are currently estimated to have a fleet providing 5.1 million TEU of capacity, while Maersk Line are second with 4.2m, ahead of CMA CGM with 3.4m in third.

MSC and Maersk are disbanding their 2M Alliance vessel sharing arrangement by 2025, with both carriers expected to run their own independent networks in the future. However, MSC appear to be the one showing the more ambitious intent at this moment in time.
