US Flight Disruption Due To Ongoing Government Shutdown

As the US government shutdown enters its second week, airports across the nation are experiencing growing disruption due to air traffic control shortages.

The US federal government shut down on October 1st, after Congress failed to pass funding legislation. Both major political parties have blamed each other for the stalemate, which has resulted in the suspension of many non-essential government functions.

While air traffic controllers are classified as essential personnel and are required to continue working during a shutdown, they are not receiving pay. Widespread reports indicate that many controllers are calling in sick, citing financial strain and stress caused by the ongoing impasse.

This staffing shortfall has led to a surge in flight delays and cancellations. In some airports, staffing levels have reportedly dropped to as low as 50% at times, creating serious operational challenges.

Major hubs including Newark, Phoenix, Denver, Las Vegas, Nashville, Dallas, and Chicago have already been subject to delays, with more than three thousand flights already impacted. If the situation continues, air cargo operations could face significant disruption.

For the time being, ocean freight remains largely unaffected. Although certain administrative processes involving US Customs, the FDA, and the EPA have slowed, cargo continues to move. However, should the shutdown continue for an extended period, more pronounced delays may emerge across ocean freight too.
