Ocean Shipping
Despite a short window that allowed only an estimated 8 to 12 vessels to transit, the critical maritime chokepoint has effectively remained closed since, leaving global shipping routes in a state of uncertainty.
On Saturday, the containership CMA CGM Everglade came under fire while attempting to navigate the strait. Iranian gunboats reportedly issued warning shots, resulting in damage to some containers. However, the French carrier later confirmed that the ship itself was unharmed and all crew members were safe. The Everglade was not alone—five vessels from the CMA CGM fleet attempted to exit during the reopening, but none were ultimately able to complete the passage.
In a separate but equally serious incident, US forces intercepted the Iranian-flagged containership MV Touska in the north Arabian Sea as it sailed toward Bandar Abbas. After repeated warnings to evacuate the engine room went unheeded, the US Navy fired multiple rounds from a deck gun before boarding and seizing the vessel.
These confrontations highlight the growing volatility in one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways. With shipping companies unable to guarantee safe passage, the continued instability threatens to disrupt global trade flows and further inflame an already tense geopolitical situation.
