Rising Threat: Fires on Cargo Ships Disrupt Global Supply Chains

Fires aboard cargo ships are becoming an increasingly severe risk to international trade, with recent high-profile incidents underscoring the dangers to vessels, crews, and cargo.

Beyond the immediate devastation, such incidents can lead to prolonged supply chain disruptions, costly salvage operations, and in the worst cases, loss of life. The most recent example involves the Danish-flagged Marie Maersk, where a blaze raged for nearly a week before it was finally brought under control.

The fire, first spotted when smoke began seeping from containers during the vessel’s journey from Rotterdam to Malaysia, has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities of ocean freight shipping.

This incident comes just weeks after another fire aboard the container ship Wan Hai 503 in June. While the Indian Coast Guard successfully evacuated the crew, the vessel remains stranded off the Indian coast more than two months later, with both India and Sri Lanka refusing entry.

Now widely referred to as “the vessel no one wants,” the case illustrates just how complex and politically sensitive maritime emergencies can become when fires escalate beyond control.

These events serve as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of securing adequate cargo insurance. Without the right protection in place, shippers risk significant financial losses when unforeseen disasters strike.
