Ocean Freight Rates Set To Rise As Asia Peak Season Approaches

Ocean freight rates are expected to rise again as several major carriers announce pricing increases ahead of the traditional Asia peak season, with new rates scheduled to take effect from 1 June.

The planned increases vary depending on the carrier, trade route, and port pairing, with many being implemented through a combination of General Rate Increases (GRIs) and Peak Season Surcharges (PSS). Although previous attempts to raise rates have occasionally been softened or cancelled before taking effect, current market dynamics appear more supportive of an increase this time around.

Shipping lines have been intensifying efforts to control capacity across key trade lanes. In recent weeks, carriers operating within the major alliances have announced a notable rise in blank sailings, reducing space availability and helping to create artificially high demand levels.

At the same time, reports across the industry indicate that actual demand on Asia–Europe services has picked up significantly over the past fortnight. Some carriers believe this may signal the beginning of an earlier-than-usual peak season. Similar trends are emerging on Asia–North America routes, where the transpacific market is also experiencing signs of stronger demand.

With these developments in mind, importers should be prepared for the potential of freight rate increases from June 1st. Croft Cargo will continue monitoring the market closely and provide updates as conditions evolve.
