Ocean Freight Market Enters Early Peak Season as Capacity Tightens

Global ocean freight markets are experiencing a noticeable increase in activity, with demand accelerating earlier than many had anticipated. The trend is particularly evident on major export routes from Asia, where booking volumes have risen steadily in recent weeks.

Several factors are driving the stronger market conditions. Importers in a range of sectors are bringing forward shipments to mitigate potential risks associated with economic uncertainty, geopolitical developments and evolving trade policies. Businesses trading with the United States are also closely monitoring the upcoming expiration of current tariff measures, leading some organisations to expedite orders ahead of any possible changes.

At the same time, shipping lines have continued to manage capacity through blank sailing programmes across a number of key trade lanes. This reduction in available vessel space, combined with higher demand, has created increasing pressure on equipment availability and overall network capacity.

Industry figures show that global container volumes increased by approximately 5% during the first four months of 2025. Demand originating from Asia has strengthened significantly since early May, prompting carriers operating on the Transpacific corridor to introduce additional sailings and services in an effort to accommodate growing cargo volumes.

Market conditions are also being influenced by developments in the Gulf region. Ongoing tensions continue to create uncertainty for global supply chains, particularly around energy markets and transportation costs. Any further escalation could add additional pressure to freight operations in the months ahead.

As a result of these combined factors, freight rates have continued to rise while available capacity becomes increasingly constrained. Current indicators suggest that these conditions are likely to persist through at least the end of July, with peak season demand expected to remain strong across many trade lanes.

Croft Cargo is monitoring the situation closely and encourages customers to make shipping arrangements as early as possible. Advance planning and early bookings remain the most effective way to secure space, maintain supply chain continuity and reduce the risk of delays during the busy peak season period.
