New UK Border Controls Phasing In From January

Forwarders and traders are set for a busy start to next year, following confirmation that new border controls are planned to be phased in from January 2024.

The UK government's Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), which was originally published as a draft version in April, has been finalised and was confirmed on August 29th.

A hectic first quarter will now see the introduction of BOTM, which includes sanitary and phytosanitary controls, full controls for non-qualifying Northern Ireland goods introduced and the CDS export move from CHIEF finalised.

This is then followed up in April by the introduction of checks on medium risk animal products, plants, plant products and high risk food (and feed) of non-animal origin from the EU.

The UK has been operating under new import and export procedures since 2021, following the UK’s exit from the EU. However, until now, the introduction of more complex controls had been postponed several times.
