Crew Injured After Attack On CMA CGM Containership in Hormuz

A CMA CGM container ship was hit by a missile while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, leaving several crew members injured as security conditions in the Gulf continue to worsen.

The French shipping group has reportedly confirmed that the affected seafarers were evacuated safely and are receiving medical care ashore.

Industry sources identified the vessel involved as the Malta-flagged CMA CGM San Antonio, a container carrier with a capacity of about 2,800 teu.

The strike took place against the backdrop of mounting tensions between Iran and the United States, with the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a major flashpoint in recent days. New maritime restrictions and rival control measures introduced by both sides have further complicated navigation for commercial vessels operating in the region.

The incident is the latest in a series of security events reported across the Gulf this week, including a fire aboard a merchant ship, another suspected missile or drone attack, and reports of an attempted confrontation involving fast-moving small boats.

According to shipping industry estimates, roughly 22,500 seafarers aboard around 1,550 merchant vessels representing 87 nations are effectively stranded within the wider Gulf area due to the increasingly unstable security situation.

Following the events, President Trump announced a temporary suspension of Washington’s newly launched maritime protection initiative, dubbed “Project Freedom.”

The operation, introduced just days earlier, was designed to safeguard commercial traffic moving through the Strait of Hormuz using a large-scale military escort system. Plans reportedly called for more than 100 aircraft, extensive unmanned surveillance assets, and nearly 15,000 military personnel operating from both naval and land-based positions.

Only 48 hours after announcing the mission, however, Trump said the United States would pause the operation while diplomatic discussions with Iran are explored.
