Containerships Remain Trapped As Iran Tightens Hormuz Controls

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate despite fresh claims from President Trump that diplomatic discussions between the United States and Iran are getting serious.

While Washington signals a possible thaw in relations, Tehran is simultaneously increasing its control over one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.

Iranian officials have announced plans to expand the maritime area it oversees around the Strait, publishing revised navigation maps that extend Iranian operational coverage across approximately 8,800 square miles. The newly outlined zone reaches into waters internationally recognised as part of Oman and the United Arab Emirates, prompting growing concern among regional governments and global shipping operators.

The development follows Iran’s recent establishment of the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), a newly created body tasked with regulating vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian authorities, all commercial and privately operated ships travelling within the expanded area will be required to communicate directly with the PGSA for transit coordination.

Tehran are also introducing a formal approval process for vessels entering or passing through the Strait. Shipping firms are expected to receive updated guidance by email, which outlines operational compliance measures. Meanwhile, reports from Iran suggest lawmakers are advancing legislation that could place tighter controls on vessels with links to the United States or Israel.

Maritime traffic through the Strait remains muted. Current activity is largely restricted to oil tankers and vessels operating under arrangements accepted by Iranian authorities. Shipping data indicates that more than 100 container ships are currently still held up within the Persian Gulf, though the persistent turning on and off of GPS systems continues to disrupt accurate vessel tracking.

Croft Cargo is continuing to closely monitor developments and evaluate the wider implications for international shipping and global supply chains.
