Concerns Return As Middle East Shipping Risks Escalate

Fresh developments in Yemen are raising concern over the future security of the Red Sea-Suez shipping route, at a time when vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz remain heavily disrupted.

Houthi forces have reportedly advanced beyond the recently captured Red Sea port city of Mokha to Dhubab, a town opposite Perim Island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. While full control of Dhubab has not been confirmed, the reported advance would bring the group closer to one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

Bab el-Mandeb forms the southern entrance to the Red Sea, linking the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal. Any major threat to vessels passing through the Strait could once again lead carriers to avoid the route and divert around the Cape of Good Hope. For Asia-Europe services, this would add considerable distance and time to already complex supply chains.

The situation remains particularly significant because container lines have only begun cautiously reassessing Red Sea transits after an extended period of diversions. Current vessel movements continue and there is no confirmed closure of Bab el-Mandeb, but the latest developments underline the volatility of the position.

Elsewhere in the region, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is continuing at much lower levels following attacks and reported incidents involving merchant vessels. The Strait is a key route for Gulf exports, and reduced traffic is creating further uncertainty for cargo owners and carriers operating to and from the region.

The combined pressure on these two maritime gateways could affect schedules, equipment availability and fuel costs across global freight networks. There is currently no confirmed general closure of major Gulf container ports, including Jebel Ali.
