Carriers Move Towards Suez Return Despite Regional Tensions

Despite recently rising tensions around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, several container carriers are progressing towards a return to shipping via the Suez Canal.

The biggest indication came from Gemini Cooperation partners Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, who announced that four additional services — AE5, AE11, AE12 and ME2 — would return to Suez routing. These connect Asia, including the Indian subcontinent, with Europe.

Avoiding the lengthy diversion around the Cape of Good Hope could save approximately 10–14 days on Asia–Europe journeys, depending on the service. Two of the returning services also include direct calls at London Gateway, offering potentially welcome improvements for UK importers and exporters.

OOCL took another significant step last week when OOCL Portugal passed through the canal on 16 September, travelling eastbound from Belgium towards China. This marked the carrier’s first returning vessel since the Red Sea crisis prompted widespread diversions, although a wider service return has not been confirmed.

MSC has also announced selected sailings through Suez, including eastbound departures on its Albatros Asia–North Europe service, alongside several Mediterranean services. Reports suggest CMA CGM and COSCO are also restoring selected routings, although service information is yet to be confirmed.

These developments come as security concerns intensify. Houthi forces have advanced along Yemen’s western coastline, strengthening their position near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Further returns remain dependent on security assessments, and routing decisions could change if conditions deteriorate.
