Major infrastructure repairs are restricting rail access to both ports, with disruption expected to last several more days.
Tilbury’s rail services have been suspended for the week, while fewer services are operating at London Gateway. There is currently no confirmed date for a full return to normal operations.
The incident occurred on Friday 23 October, when several wagons of a GB Railfreight container train derailed while travelling from London Gateway to Hams Hall in Birmingham. The affected railway forms an important connection between the Thames ports and the UK’s inland freight network.
Inspections subsequently revealed that around 1.2 kilometres of track would need replacing. Damage to overhead electrical equipment and rolling stock has added to the recovery work, with detailed assessments required before the line can safely reopen.
The loss of rail capacity is also placing pressure on road transport as containers are diverted to alternative services. Increased demand for haulage and collection slots may affect availability, requiring some deliveries to be rescheduled.
Customers with cargo passing through either port should allow additional flexibility when planning collections and onward deliveries while repairs continue.
